Zcash (ZEC) is a decentralised, open-source cryptocurrency that provides strong privacy protections using cutting-edge zero-knowledge proofs called zk-SNARKs.
Launched in 2016 and based on the original Zerocash academic paper, Zcash offers users the choice between transparent transactions (similar to Bitcoin) and fully shielded, private transactions where the sender, receiver, and amount are all cryptographically hidden.
Like Bitcoin, Zcash has a fixed supply of 21 million coins and uses proof-of-work mining - specifically the Equihash algorithm. This makes ZEC mineable with dedicated ASIC hardware, giving miners real earning potential while securing the network.
